Half an hour before the funeral was scheduled to start, just about the time people started to arrive, I discovered that the trashcans in both bathrooms were overflowing, full from the services this morning. I ran downstairs, where several people had been setting up for the reception, and asked if someone could empty the trash. “We’ll take care of it,” they said.
“I’ll do it,” said Jim. “I’m already standing up.”
I thanked them, went upstairs and checked on something in the sanctuary, then met Jim in the hallway. He had a full garbage bag in each hand. “Thanks, Jim,” I said.
“No problem,” he said. “The way I see it, it’s good news that they’re full. Means people are here. There’s even a baby diaper in one of these. That’s really good news!”
